Speaker’s Name: Arelys Castillo – Katia De León

Topic: The Importance of the Board in EFL classrooms.

Specific subject: Important points to consider when using the board in EFL classrooms.

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the usage of the board and their importance in EFL classrooms.

Introduction

  1. Attention getter: Let's rewind to a time before PowerPoint presentations and interactive whiteboards. Imagine a classroom without a board. No place for equations to dance, no canvas for concepts to come alive, no visual roadmap for our intellectual journey. Today, we're uncovering the hero of education: the board, and why it remains a cornerstone of effective teaching.

  2. Thesis Statement: As future teachers, we should consider and analyze the effectiveness of the board in order to help learners to improve in their process of learning.

  3. Preview on main points: In this presentation, we will provide information about the definition and the specific definition of the board in EFL classrooms, types of boards, the roles of the board, advantages, disadvantages, guidelines for preparing and using the board, the board assessment, activities, and examples of the board used in EFL classrooms.

(Transition: We are going to start by explaining the definitions of what the board is.)

Body

  1. According to Cambrigde dictionary a board is a thin, flat piece of cut wood or other hard material, often used for a particular purpose. Also, the term "board" typically refers to a surface, usually made of a whiteboard or chalkboard material, used for writing or displaying information during teaching sessions.

(Transition: Now let's talk about what is the board in classroom

  1. According to Fronz (2023) The board is a pedagogical tool for teachers that provide a clear and effective teaching process that promotes readability and applicability of the displayed content.

(Transition: Next, we will discuss the types of the board we can use.)

  1.  For effective learning, it is essential to be clear on what type of boards exist and which one can help in different fields of learning.

According to Hasa (2020) and Hanna (2024) there are 3 different types of board in the classroom:

  1. Whiteboard: It is a wipeable board with a white surface used for teaching or presentations.

  2. Chalkboard: It is a hard and smooth board with a green surface on which you can write and draw using chalk.

  3. Interactive Whiteboard: It facilitates dynamic presentations, collaboration and educational demonstrations by combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with advanced technology.

(Transition: Now that we have discussed the types of the board, we can continue with its role in EFL classrooms.)

IV.  The role of the board in the EFL classroom and its usage:

According to Meier (n.d) the role of the board is:

  1. It works as a multifunctional teaching aid to support the teaching process and language learning.

  2. It allows students to showcase their thinking, share ideas, and brainstorm.

  3. It serves as a visual aid, facilitating learning through the display of information, illustrations, diagrams, and other educational content.

(Transition: Next, we move on to the board advantages for teachers and students in the EFL classroom.)

V. Advantages of using the board for teachers and students:

According with Bowie (2024) some advantages for teachers are:

  1. It increases student engagement in the learning process.

  2. It is a flexible option for educators who are utilizing an active teaching methodology and want to be able to teach in a variety of settings and groups of students.

  3. It is helpful for whole-class activities or for sharing instructions, formulas, or other important assignment information with students.

According to BoardMix (2024) some advantages for students are:

  1. It works as an excellent tool for visual learning.

  2. It promotes collaborative learning during group activities or discussions.

  3. It provides a platform for immediate feedback.

(Transition: In addition, there are also disadvantages for teachers and students.)

VI. Some disadvantages of the different types of board for teachers and students are:

According to Balla, E., & Bushgjokaj, A. (2019):

  1. Traditional Whiteboard/Chalkboard:

  1. Limited space may constrain the amount of content that can be displayed, particularly in classrooms with large class sizes or limited board space.

  2. Writing and erasing on the board may be time-consuming, leading to disruptions in the flow of the lesson.

  3. Visibility and legibility of handwriting may vary, especially for students seated farther away from the board.

  4. Chalk dust or marker odor may cause discomfort or allergies for some students.

B. Interactive Whiteboard:

  1. Technical issues such as connectivity problems or software glitches may disrupt lessons and require troubleshooting.

  2. Learning to effectively use interactive features may require time and training, potentially leading to a learning curve.

  3. Dependency on technology may result in reliance on pre-made digital materials rather than promoting teacher creativity.Dependency on digital resources may hinder the development of traditional note-taking or writing skills.Interactive features may become distractions, detracting from the focus on language learning.

(Transition: To continue, it is time to view some guidelines for preparing the board effectively.)

VII. A teacher should consider important guidelines at the time of preparing and using the board.

According to Walton (2022), as teachers we should follow important guidelines for preparing the board such as:

  1. Be organized

  2. Be consistent

  3. Use your whiteboard to teach what is important

  4. Keep it neat

  1. Board Organization:

When utilizing the board as a teaching tool, teachers should adhere to several important guidelines to optimize the learning experience for their students.

  1. It's crucial for teachers to prepare the board in advance, ensuring that the content is organized, relevant, and easy to follow.

  2. Teachers should maintain clarity and legibility when writing or drawing on the board, using appropriate colors and font sizes to enhance visibility for all students.

  3. Pace the lesson appropriately, allowing students sufficient time to process the information presented on the board and engage with the material through discussion or activities.

  1. Blackboard Drawing:

According to MacErland, S. and Peyton, V. (2013), as teachers we should remember important things such as:

  1. The most important thing about the pictures you draw is that they show the meaning of the word. Don’t worry if the drawing isn’t very good, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes it’s better if the drawing is a bit odd. The students will remember it better. Drawings help to make your lessons more interesting, so don’t think you can’t draw.

  2. As you draw, ask questions about what you’re drawing, for example: “What’s this?”, “Where is he?”, “What’s he doing?” etc.

  3. First draw the big things, then draw the little things. For example, draw the head and body before drawing the eyes or the mouth.

  4. Blackboard drawings should be clear and simple. Don’t draw unnecessary details like teeth, fingers, clothes etc.

  5. Make sure that each part of the drawing is the right size, and make sure it’s in the right place.

  1. Approach to Teaching a New Lesson:

According to Kostoulas (n.d), Presentation – Practice – Production, or PPP, is a method for teaching structures (e.g. grammar or vocabulary) in a foreign language towards greater learner freedom.

It has three phases, they are:

  1. Presentation Phase

  2. Practice Phase

  3. Production Phase

(Transition: To continue, we are going to provide the board assessment)

VIII. The Board Assessment:

A. Margins:

  1. Maintained all around the board.

B. Board Organization:

  1. Well organized

  2. Administered space using the H Model

  3. Easy to Follow

  4. Uncluttered.

C. Content:

  1. A whole Lesson with vocabulary and/or grammar is taught using PPP Approach.

D. Pictures:

  1. Used Figure Stick Drawings with colors1.

E. Colors:

1. Used dark color for text (black and blue).

F. Emphasis:

  1. Important Features areUnderlined/circled with (red and or green).

G. Handwriting:

  1. Legible and neat (cursive)

  2. Blueprint was graphed

  3. Written in straight lines

  4. Big enough (size of your thumb)

 H. Errors:

  1. Free of grammar

  2. Spelling

  3. Capitalization errors.

I.Board Space:

  1. Blank space left.

(Transition: To continue, we are going to provide type of  activities)

IX. Types of Activities with the Board in the EFL Classroom:

According to Clarke (2008), and Sweeney (2024) we can use the board for the following activities:

  1. Vocabulary drills

  2. Brainstorming

  3. Grammar explanations

  4. Visual aids

(Transition:Now, let’s provide some examples of using the board in EFL classrooms .)

X.  Examples of using the  board for EFL classrooms:

  1. We can utilize the board for vocabulary drills, brainstorming sessions, grammar explanations, and visual aids.

  2. Create a collaborative story by beginning with a prompt such as 'Once upon a time, there was a mysterious island...' and having students brainstorm subsequent plot developments, fostering creativity and building on each other's ideas.

Now that we know these types of activities, we can provide detailed examples using the board in an EFL classroom:

(Transition: To conclude this formal presentation about the board, we should recall that…)

XI. Conclusion

  1.  The  board is an essential tool for teaching and learning that helps us transmit our ideas and knowledge.

  2. Effective utilization involves preparation and adherence to guidelines such as clarity and relevance.

  3. Strategies like clear drawings, the PPP approach, and diverse activities promote student engagement, comprehension, and retention, guiding learners towards fluency in both oral and written communication.
