Formal Presentation - Preparation Outline
Speaker’s Name: Yanelin Grajales
Topic: Flipcharts
Specific subject: Considerations for successful flipchart use in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the use of flip charts and their importance in EFL classrooms.
Introduction
I. Attention Getter:In a world of digital presentations and sophisticated multimedia, the humble flipchart remains a powerful tool that can captivate students. Don't underestimate the impact of this simple but versatile visual aid.
II.Thesis Statement: While digital technologies have revolutionized education, low-tech tools like flipcharts can still play a valuable role in fostering active learning and student engagement in the classroom.
III. Preview Main Points:In this presentation, I will provide information about the definitions, types, the role, advantages, disadvantages, guidelines, tips, assessment, and examples of flipcharts.
Transition: I'm going to start this presentation with what flipchart is
Body
The term flipchart can be interpreted in a few ways.
A. According to Webster (n.d.), it consists of a series of large pieces of paper which are attached at the top and which are used to present information.
B. As stated in Aryani (2022), flipcharts are sheets of paper that resemble albums or calendars organized in a series that are bounded on the top.
Transition:Now that you know what flipchart is, let's now discuss another important point: Type of flipcharts
According to the webpage Wikiwand (n.d.) There are three types of flipchart.
A. The first one is stand-alone flip chart
It has the form of a wide isosceles triangle base, typically placed on a table.
The pages are flipped to the top of the triangle to the other side.
B.The second one is metallic tripod (or easel) stand
This is the most common type of flip chart stand.
It typically comes with 3 or 4 metal legs that are connected at one extremity.
A support board is attached to two of these legs to support the large paper pad.
C. The third one is metallic mount on wheels
It usually has a flat base to support the paper pad and is mounted on one or two legs that then have a set of wheels.
The advantage of these more recent forms of stands is that it is easier to transport the flip chart from one location to another.
Transition: Next, we'll turn our focus to the roles of flipchart in EFL
In accordance with Better Evaluation (n.d.) flipcharts have many roles:
Flip charts aren't just for presentations.
Use them to facilitate group analysis, brainstorm lists (like lessons learned), or even create visuals based on your findings.
B. You can showcase your ideas and data, but also immediately capture what your students are thinking.
This fosters discussion and encourages feedback.
C. Active learning with direct interaction, they're a great tool to spark conversations with your class.
Imagine presenting a class oriented to a specific topic and using the flip chart to capture suggestions or brainstorm about it.
Transition: Knowing the role of flipcharts let's continue with the advantages and disadvantages.
As mentioned by Barraza (2024), the following are Advantages of Flipchart.
The materials for making flipcharts are relatively cheap.
They do not require electricity so you can use them anywhere.
We make it by hand
They have many uses
They are reusable
You can add more sheets in the future.
V. According to Barraza (2024),there are some limitations or drawbacks of using Flipcharts in Foreign Language Teaching.
They can not be used with large groups
They may be difficult to transport
There are some cases to store them but they are too big.
It does not last long
Transition: We have seen the advantages and disadvantages. It's time to move to another point.
VI. As explained by Lestari (2022), and Aryani (2021), the guidelines for using Flipcharts in the EFL Classroom are the following
An educator needs to master and have skills to use the media well.
Prepare materials and tools of flipchart that may be needed.
The proper determination of the media appearance position must be considered so that it can be seen by all students in the classroom.
Students' arrangements for better results.
Introduce the material to be presented at the beginning of the lesson.
It can be done by telling stories or linking the learning with events that occur around.
F. Present the pictures on a flip chart sheet and provide related information according to the learning material with the use of simple language that is easy for students to understand.
G. Teachers should give students the opportunity to participate.
H. Teachers should conclude the material.
Conclusions do not have to be by the teacher, but rather students who must conclude the material reinforced by the teacher.
Transition: After we have seen how to use flipchart in an EFL classroom, we need to move to important recommendations or tips.
VII. According to Barraza (2024) there are some recommendations that we have to keep in mind when we are making our flipcharts.
Make borders strong
Be creative
Write big on the flipchart
Do not forget the 7x7 rule
Use markers that do not bleed
Practice, practice and practice
Transition: Now that you know the recommendations, let's now discuss another important point
VIII. To create a Flipchart we need to assess them to be sure that they are good enough. So according to Barraza,(2024) there are some criterias that we have to consider.
Originality: Presentation shows considerable originality, creativity and inventiveness.
All pages have their borders reinforced.
The set of Flipchart is a highly effective study guide. It includes:Title page,
Presentation phase (vocabulary or grammar in context),Presentation phase (vocabulary or grammar out of context), Practice phase, and Production phase. Blank sheet after each content sheet.
Emphasis: Important features are underlined/circled.
Engagement and interactivity: Provides multiple opportunities for interaction, response and feedback.
Figure stick drawings: Drawings are attractive (size and colors) and support the theme/content of the lesson
Font: The set of Flipchart has clear, legible, straight and centered font. The size and colors are appropriate. Excellentuse of underlining.
Format and Layout: Format and layout are very well organized, attractive and neat. All Margins have been maintained.
All pages followed the 7x 7 rule.
Presentation has no misspellings or grammatical errors.
Transition:It's time to talk about the types of activities
IX. Types of Activities with Flipcharts in the EFL Classroom
Dialogues
Interviews
Production of sentences on their own
Teach a lesson
Explain a topic
Question and answer session
Brainstorming
Lastly we have examples of Flipcharts

Provided from previous years.
XI. Conclusion
In conclusion, while digital presentations offer undeniable advantages, the power of the flipchart should not be forgotten. As we have seen, flipcharts offer a variety of benefits. By strategically incorporating flipcharts, educators can create a dynamic, interactive learning environment that benefits students of all backgrounds. Remember, the most effective teaching methods often use a variety of tools, and the humble flipchart can be a powerful addition to any educator's arsenal.
