Formal Presentation Preparation Outline

Speakers' Name: Britney Martez and Isamar Hernández

Topic: PowerPoint Games

Specific subject: Utilizing PowerPoint Games in ESL Teaching.

Specific Purpose: To inform future English language teachers to understand how PowerPoint games can benefit ESL teaching to improve student engagement, learning results, and classroom enjoyment.

Introduction

I.     Attention getter: What if I told you that learning English could be fun? Let us forget about traditional language lessons, and let me introduce you to PowerPoint games.

II.    Thesis Statement:           Research        has      shown that games have been found to increase

motivation, teach complex understanding, provide opportunities for reflective learning, and give feedback and points for self-regulation. (Betrus & Botturi, 2010 cited in Siko, J. P, 2013).

III.   Preview on main points: We are going to talk to you about the definitions, types of

PowerPoint games, the role of games in foreign language teaching, the benefits of PowerPoint games, disadvantages of using PowerPoint games , guidelines for PowerPoint games for our EFL classroom, important features of Powerpoint games, assessments, activities that we can make with PowerPoint Games, and examples of PowerPoint games. (Transition: Before we start talking about PowerPoint games, let us start by understanding what exactly PowerPoint and PowerPoint games are).

Body

I.   It is important to be clear with the definitions of Powerpoint and Powerpoint games.

A.      According to Cambridge Dictionary. (n.d). PowerPoint is “A brand name for a computer program that helps you to create and give presentations”.

B.      According to Budasi et. al., (2020). A PowerPoint game is an educational activity developed using Microsoft's PowerPoint Presentation software. This interactive learning tool is specifically crafted to introduce young learners to new ideas, explore specific topics, increase their understanding, all while engaging them through gameplay.

(Transition Statement: Well, with a clear understanding of the definitions of PowerPoint and PowerPoint games, we can explain to you about the different types of PowerPoint games).

II.  Free PowerPoint Templates. (n.d.). and Yasbiati et. al., (2019). State that there are different types of PowerPoint games.

A.      People use PowerPoint games for business to make meetings and training more fun

and interesting.

B.      PowerPoint games for classroom settings make learning fun, and it creates a competitive and friendly atmosphere.

C.     PowerPoint games for education are designed for educational purposes to stimulate students in a positive way and today are a suitable method for childhood education. (Transition Statement: After we saw the different types of PowerPoint presentations, we are going to give you information about the role of PowerPoint Games in Foreign Language

Teaching).

III.According to Kozlova (2021). Research has shown that games are essential for healthy development in early childhood and beyond, and states the role of games in foreign language teaching.

A.      To help to experiment through trial and error because students can try and try and they will learn from their mistakes.

B.      To find solutions to problems because they have to find a way to solve what they are asked.

C.     To work out the best strategies because they have to think carefully to win, here they will discover the best strategies that work for them.

D.     To build new confidence and skills because they are playing while they are learning, that is how they will feel more confident and secure about themselves.

(Transition Statement: We understood the significant role that PowerPoint games play in foreign language teaching, let us see the benefits in the ESL classroom).

IV.          According to Anderson (2021). PowerPoint games offer a range of benefits in the ESL classroom.

A.      PowerPoint games provide structure for interactions because it can help students to follow an organized order.

B.      PowerPoint games reward students for collaborating and problem solving because they

C.     PowerPoint games promote cooperative learning because students can work in groups in order to play while they are learning.

D.     PowerPoint games promote individual accountability because each student knows that they have responsibilities and they will do their part to achieve their common

goal.

E.      PowerPoint games promote interdependence because every student has skills and strength and they can develop them with the group.

F.      PowerPoint games fulfill the need for group processing and feedback because it helps to discuss at the end of the class any kind of doubt that students have,

(Transition Statement: Now that you know the benefits of using PowerPoint games, let us move on to some disadvantages of using PowerPoint games).

V. According to Barraza (2024). There are some disadvantages of using PowerPoint games in our classroom.

A.      The lack of technical knowledge is a disadvantage because if the professor does not know how to use it, they will not be able to use PowerPoint games.

B.      The lack of adequate equipment is a disadvantage because not all the classrooms have the right equipment to use PowerPoint Games.

C.     The lack of electricity is a disadvantage because without electricity professors will not be able to use and neither will the students.

D.     The lack of clearness in the objectives is a disadvantage because if you do not have a clear objective students will be just playing with no educational purpose.

(Transition Statement: After we have seen the disadvantages of PowerPoint games, my partner Isamar is going to talk to you about the guidelines to create PowerPoint games for EFL classroom).

VI.          Osmani & Sánchez, (2017). State that there are 3 steps in order to create interactive PowerPoint games.

A.      The first step is to create a concept map of the interactive PowerPoint game.

B.      The second step is to add hyperlinks to a slide within the same presentation.

C.     The third step is to add hyperlinks to an external file or web page in the presentation.

(Transition Statement: continuing with the guidelines for creating PowerPoint games, there are other aspects that we need to take into consideration).

VII.         According to Osmani & Sánchez, (2017). There are other relevant features in the creation of PowerPoint games as:

A.      Text style is a relevant feature in the creation of PowerPoint because you can add a fun flare to your presentation by changing font type.

B.      Images are a relevant feature in the creation of PowerPoint because they enhance

visual learning.

C.     Sound effects are a relevant feature in the creation of PowerPoint because they bring your game to life.

D.     Transitions are a relevant feature in the creation of PowerPoint because we can customize how slides will transition throughout the presentation.

E.      Animations are a relevant feature in the creation of PowerPoint because we can make objects move in our presentation.

(Transition Statement: Now I am going to move on to the next point, which is PowerPoint assessment.)

VIII.        According to Barraza (2024), we must take into consideration the following criteria, when we are assessing a powerpoint game .

A.      PowerPoint games rules must be clearly outlined and easy to understand, so students can understand the game and how to use it.

B.      PowerPoint games must have clear objectives at the beginning of the game, so students will know what we are learning.

C.     PowerPoint games must be accurate and complete, which means if the game covers the lesson that we choose to teach.

D.     PowerPoint games must be created with effort that show how hard the person works in the game.

E.      PowerPoint games must be fun to play, so students can be caught by the game.

F.      PowerPoint games must be interactive, so students do not get bored.

G.     PowerPoint games must be created for the intended audience.

H.     PowerPoint games must have sounds and animations, so our game will be more

interesting for our students.

I.        PowerPoint games must provide feedback of correct and incorrect answers.

J.       PowerPoint games must be created for students’ level.

(Transition Statement: Now, I am going to talk about some activities that we can do with PowerPoint presentations.)

IX.          There are many activities that we can make with PowerPoint Games for our EFL classroom.

A.      We can make quizzes with PowerPoint Games.

B.      We can make Memory games with PowerPoint Games.

C.     We can imitate popular show games with PowerPoint games.

D.     We can adapt board games with PowerPoint Games.

(Transition Statement: After this explanation, I can follow with the examples of PowerPoint

Games.)

X. On the internet we can find a lot of examples of PowerPoint games for EFL classrooms, but today we are going to show you 3 examples by students from

previous years.

A.      “ Fashion outlet” is an example of a PowerPoint game.

B.      “Country guessing and nationality adventure” is an example of a PowerPoint game.

C.     “Workzzle” is an example of a PowerPoint game.

Conclusion

I.     Signal Closing: We have came to the end of our presentation and we have seen different aspects of power point game such as:

II.    Review main ideas: Definition of PowerPoint and PowerPoint games , types, the role of PowerPoint Games in FLT, the advantages, disadvantages, the guidelines, assessments for, the activities and examples of PowerPoint.
