Topic: The Effective Use of Posters in the Classroom.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience on how to enhance language teaching through
effective use of posters.
Central Idea: Posters serve as invaluable tools for enhancing language acquisition and
promote self-directed learning among students.
I. Introduction
A. Attention getter: Imagine being in a classroom decorated not just with colorful posters, but with tools that make learning new vocabulary in a foreign language easier.
B. Establish credibility: Through extensive research into academic journals, and articles, I have gained valuable knowledge about posters so I can provide informed perspectives on various instructional tools to enrich the educational experience of students.
C. Thesis Statement: Today, I will analyze the significance of posters in foreign language teaching and how they are more than just decorative elements in the classroom.
D. A. Definitions of Posters
1. According to Merriam Webters (2022), poster is sizable printed document, often adorned with images, displayed in a public area, typically for advertising or promotion.
2. However, in an educational context, posters are defined differently. Osa & Musser (2004, as cited in Bonala Kondal & V. Durga Prasad, 2019) describe them as colorful, attractive learning tools that enrich the learning environment. Educational posters often include diagrams, charts, and illustrations to enhance understanding and facilitate learning.

B. Types of Posters
1. Traditional Posters
a. DIY (Do-It-Yourself): Created using traditional art supplies like paint, markers, pencils, or print designs.
b. Commercial: Available for purchase at stores, online shops, or from printing companies.
2. Digital Posters
a. DIY (Do-It-Yourself): Created using web-based graphic design platforms like Adobe Photoshop or Canva.
b. Commercial: Available on websites or online shops offering pre-designed templates or customizable digital poster designs.

C. The Role of Posters in Foreign Language Teaching
1. Poster can enhance L2 vocabulary knowledge through self-directed learning (Çetin & Flamand, 2013).
2. Poster are colorful and attractive, grabbing student’s attention and making learning fun (Osa & Musser, 2004).
3. Poster helps students develop language proficiency through task repetition (Jouannaud, 2003).

D. Integrating posters into language teaching can offers advantages for teachers and students.
1. For Teachers:

b. Poster can be an inexpensive teaching tool.
c. Teacher can use posters to reinforce lessons.
d. Teachers can use posters to make fewer engaging topics more interesting and captivating.
e. Posters can be reused and adjusted.
2. For Students:
a. Poster helps students learn topics thoroughly.
b. Posters help students absorb visual information much faster, making the content easier to follow.
c. It is an effective way to grab students’ attention and maintain their interest in the lesson (Berry & Houston, 1995).
d. It is an effective medium for developing communication skills (Berry & Houston, 1995).

E. While posters offer numerous benefits in language teaching, there are also, challenges and limitations associated with their use.
1. For Teachers:
a. Designing, creating, and organizing posters can be time-consuming (Reily, 2007).
b. Teachers without artistic abilities might struggle to create engaging posters.
c. Posters cannot convey complex information due to limited space.
d. Teachers may not cover all necessary topic comprehensively.
e. Teachers may face with error checking when using posters. This means make grammatically error when using the language.
2. For Students:
a. Posters can lack context, making it difficult for students to understand language use.
b. Students limit their language learning to only the words and phrases presented on the posters (Alsalihi, 2020).
c. Students might struggle to understand the content or lose interest if the language used in the posters is too complex or if the poster contains much text.
d. Posters can tend to promote passive learning among students.

F. Guidelines for making and using posters in the EFL classroom
1. Essential Features of a Good Poster (Bonala Kondal & V. Durga
Prasad, 2019):
a. Brevity: Present the minimum words effectively. Posters should range between 600 and 800 words (Driskill, 2010).
b. Simplicity: The message should be easily and effectively understood.
c. Design and color: Use appropriate size, design, and color. Ensure that any illustrations or images are clear and relevant (Turner, 2021).
d. Appropriateness: The theme and subject matter should correspond.
e. Attractiveness: It should capture the attention of the audience.
2. Posters should have a sense of harmony and order (Cooper, C.,2024).
To have this, we can use symmetrical layouts such as: horizontal symmetry, vertical symmetry, and diagonal symmetry.
3. Use easy-to-read fonts like Arial and Times New Roman.
